  Industries
With its geographical and transport advantages, Komatsu City promotes the development of emerging industries while continuing to boost established businesses.

  • Komatsu City’s industrial structure is characterized by the very high percentage of core industries such as textile, machinery and equipment, and traditional art crafts, as well as the small and medium-size companies which make up the majority of the total. In recent years, the percentage of hi-tech industries such as partitions and electronic modules has been increasing.

  • Information service industry is one of the key industries in which the city takes interest. In fact, the numbers of businesses and employees engaging in this industry per 100,000 population in Ishikawa Prefecture ranks 3rd and 4th in Japan, respectively (in 2001).

  • Traditional industries, including Kutani pottery, silk textiles and tatami mats, still constitute an important sector of the city.
  • Two great Kutani potters of Komatsu, TOKUDA Yasokichi III and YOSHITA Minori, have been designated by the Japanese government as “Ningen-Kokuho” (Living National Treasures).
    “Kaga Silk” dates back to the 10th century and this silk made in Komatsu was very popular in Edo era according to old records. Now, the city is one of Japan’s leading production centers of silk and synthetic textiles.

      Companies
      It is little known that Komatsu Ltd, a world-leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, was established in Komatsu in 1921 and moved its headquarters to Tokyo in 1951. With its largest production base in Japan and approximately 100 affiliates in Komatsu, it has contributed greatly to the concentration of various manufacturing industries in the city. More recently, Hino Auto Body Ltd. established its head office and production plant in one of the city’s Industrial Parks. Some companies based in Komatsu dominate certain Japanese or world market segments. There are also some companies, although small, that are even competitive in the world market with their highly specialized products.

      Industrial Parks
    Komatsu City provides three industrial parks; Komatsu, Komatsu South, and Komatsu East Industrial Parks. All of them have fiber optic capabilities and are conveniently located with good access to Komatsu Airport, Hokuriku Expressway Interchanges, and JR Komatsu Station.

    Some lots are still available for sale in two of them: Komatsu and Komatsu South Industrial Parks.
  • About 70 companies are based in and around the Komatsu Industrial Park,
        and this area constitutes one of Ishikawa Prefecture's major industry concentrations.
  • Komatsu South Industrial Park is situated in the southern part of the city,
        and adjacent to Awazu Plant of Komatsu Ltd.

      Incentive Programs
  • Ishikawa Prefecture supports businesses to get started in Komatsu City by granting subsidies (up to 3.5 billion yen) and low-interest loans (up to 500 million yen) on the basis of investment amount and according to applicable laws, ordinances and other regulations.        For details, click here.
  • In addition to the above incentives, subsidies (up to 200 million yen) and low-interest loans (up to 100 million yen) on the basis of investment amount are also available from Komatsu City according to applicable city ordinances and regulations.
