1) Status of Residence and Period of Stay
The status of residence and period of stay are determined according to the
purpose of visiting Japan when a foreign national enters Japan to stay.
The permitted status of residence and period of stay at the time of entering
Japan would be indicated on the passport.There are 27 types of status of
residence and one must not engage in activities other than the status of
residence that has been permitted. There are seven different periods of stay,
i.e., 15 days, 90 days, three months, six months, a year, two years and three years,
and one is required to take procedures to obtain a permit, when one wishes to
stay beyond the period of stay prescribed herein.
Procedures for residence are taken through the Immigration Bureau that holds
jurisdiction over one' s place of residence. Ishikawa is under the jurisdiction of the
Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau.
Inquiries regarding the status of residence are received at the “Immigration
Information Center in Nagoya” and the Kanazawa Branch Office.
2) Change of Status of Residence
When one is to discontinue the activities permitted by the status of residence
one currently holds, and wishes to engage in other activities, one must take
procedures to change the status of residence within the period of stay permitted.
Required documents
- Application for change of status of residence (Issued by the Immigration Bureau)
- Written statement explaining the reason for application
- Passport or Certificate of Status of Residence
- Alien Registration Card
- Permission to Engage in Activity Other than Status Qualification (If held)
In addition to the above documents, the following are required when a foreign
national of Japanese descent wishes to obtain temporary residency status.
- List of relatives abroad and relatives staying in Japan (Issued by the Immigration Bureau)
- Copy of family register of parents or grandparents
- Marriage Certificate of parents or grandparents
- Birth Certificate of parents or applicant
- Letter of Guarantee (Issued by the Immigration Bureau)
- Certificate of Occupation of the guarantor
- Certificate of Resident Tax or Certificate of Tax Payment of the guarantor
- Proof of employment in Japan
- Certified copy of company register
- Financial Statements of company
- Corporate Tax Certificate of company
- Company brochure
The following document is required when the spouse of aforeign national of
Japanese descent is to obtain a temporary residency status.
- Certificate of Registered Items in the Foreign Resident Registry of spouse
3) Permit to Engage in Activities Other than That Permitted
When a foreign resident is to receive pay through activities other than that
permitted by the status of residence held, one must follow the procedures to
obtain a permit to engage in activities other than that permitted.
- Application for a permit to engage in activities other than that permitted (Issued by the Immigration Bureau)
- Document to support the particulars of activities other than status to be engaged in
- Passport or Certificate of Status of Residence
- Alien Registration Card, etc
4) Extension of Period of Stay
When one wishes to extend the permitted period of stay to engage in the
same activities, one must follow the procedures for extension of period of stay.
Application is taken from about two months prior to the expiry of the period of
stay.

- Application for extension of period of stay (Issued by the Immigration Bureau)
- Written statement explaining the reason for application
- Letter of Guarantee (Applies only to spouse of a Japanese national or an permanent resident,etc, and fixed domicile resident)
- Passport or Certificate of Status of Residence
- Alien Registration Card
- Permission to Engage in Activity Other than Status Qualification (if held)
In case of fixed domicile resident
- Application for extension of period of stay (Issued by the Immigration Bureau)
- Letter of Guarantee
- Passport or Certificate of Status of Residence
- Alien Registration Card
- Documents required for procedures to change status of residence
- Certificate of Occupation of Applicant
- Proof of earnings issued by the applicant's local authority or certificate of income and withholding tax issued by the applicant's place of business, etc
5) Re-entry Permit
When one reenters Japan after leaving the country temporarily during the
permitted period of stay, one is not required to apply for an “entry visa” before
reentry and is able to enter the country with the same status of residence as
before leaving if one receives a “reentry permit” before leaving the country.
However, the validity period of the reentry permit is three years maximum and
until the expiry of the period of stay.
Application procedure is taken through the Immigration Bureau that holds the
jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence. In case of Komatsu, one is
required to go to Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau, Kanazawa Branch Office.
However, application can be filed by a family member such as parent, spouse, and
child or relative on behalf of the applicant if the applicant is ill or is under the
age of 16.

6) Acquiring Status of Residence
When a foreign national born in Japan is to stay over 60 days, the procedure
for acquiring status of residence is required within 30 days of birth.
The status of residence and period of stay are normally determined based on
the parent(s)'s status of residence and period of stay.

- Document proving birth (Birth Certificate, maternity passbook, etc.)
- Passports of parent(s) or parent(s)'s Alien Registration Car

1) Loss of passport
If one's passport gets lost or stolen, one must report to the local police and
have a ”Certificate of Report of Loss (Theft)” issued, which must be taken to
the embassy or consulate of one's own country to have a passport reissued.
It is advised that one prepares the documents required by enquiring by telephone
beforehand.
2) Transfer of Endorsement to New Passport
When a new passport has been issued because of the expiry of old passport
or loss, a new entry permit stamp and status of residence must be transferred
to the new passport.
Procedure must be taken at the Immigration Bureau with the old and new
passports, if the old one is available, or with the new passport if the old one is
not available.
